The trail head at the end of Big Hollow Road is not plowed. It's accessible with 4 wheel drive.
The trail is a mess of frozen boot prints....either hard packed snow, icy boot prints, or fine powder over icy rock. We carried our crampons, but it seemed to be a situation where we would be putting them on and taking them off frequently and they weren't going to be much help with the bumpy frozen boot tracks anyhow and maybe more dangerous. Snowshoes would have been pointless since the trail was too frozen to smooth down and there was a lot of exposed rock. It was basically a long day of hundreds of careful footsteps. I would prefer hiking in 3 feet of snow.
I am thinking we need micro-spikes.
