Mhrsebago and I bushwhacked these two 3K peaks today after our initial attempt during 'whack-fest-too failed... road conditions then prevented access. We approached the peaks via logging roads off Rt 16 at "Dallas". We where able to drive to within a mile or so of the valley that leads SE to the col between the peaks. Our route to Black Nubble took us up the valley on an old logging road / ATV trail to the South ridge. There we came across & followed an old cut & flagged trail that led us up through 2 clearings where wind monitoring towers where located. From the last clearing up high on the ridge an easy whack through open woods led us to the summit & jar.
Our descent off the peak took us back down to the lower clearing where we spotted an ATV trail that headed off the ridge to the West. We followed this trail all the way back down to the logging road at the base of the mountain, coming out approx a 1/4 mile N of where we started up into the valley! Nice loop!!
We then set our sights on the unnamed peak "SW Black Nubble". We went back up the old logging road / ATV trail towards the col untill at approx 2800' elevation where we struck off to the S on yet another ATV trail. This route led us up through an old cutting that was now overgrown with small spruce. Allthough the spruce where thick the going wasn't difficult. At approx 3100' we left the old cutting and entered the woods. Much to our enjoyment the woods where open and the top of the ridge was blanketed with a seemingly endless carpet of thick bright green moss! We soon reached the summit & jar.
We decided to follow the ridge back down through the open woods as far as it would take us before dropping off into the valley. We then retraced our route back to the car. Total time, 5 hours "round trip".

Thanks Mark... it was a blast!

Kurt, nice report and pics. The registers looked old style, how far back did the entries go? Dennis

The entries dated back to the late '80s.
I was surprised at the number of entries. These 2 peaks get a lot of 'traffic'. Mostly from the nearby Navy Survival School, but a Game Warden signed, as did several people out conducting 'environmental studies'.
