Another great day in the Cats with some fabulous people.

Kevin and Jerry drove up from Long Island and we met in New Paltz for breakfast. After introductions over some eggs and coffee, it was time to get back on the Thruway and head for the hills.

Snow started on the way to the trailhead. By the time we got to a slippery steep Barnum Rd there was about an inch on the road. On Barnum Rd our fourth member, Ted was unsuccessfully triing to get up the hill. We spotted the truck and proceeded back down the hill to find Ted. We found Ted waiting on the side of the road and decided to find a place in the metropolis of Maplecrest to leave his car. We found a parking lot behind the art gallery, dropped the car and continued on to Big Hollow Rd PA.

The parking lot had 4 or 5 cars in it already. Snow lightly falling we donned our crampons and started up the BK trail by 10:00. Then to the ES and finally the BM. The trail was quite steep with snow covered ice. Crampons were a must.

We summitted Blackhead and met up with another group of six. Sorry I did not catch their names, but most of them knew Ted. One of the hikers bagged his first peak on Blackhead. We had our snacks and had to move on to keep our internal furnaces going.

Ted wasn't feeling to good, so decided to go down with the other group back to the PA to catch a ride back to his car.

Three of the six moved on to Black Dome with Kevin, Jerry and myself. By this time the skies had cleared some and we had great views. The group of three touched the top and headed back to the PA. Our group of three continued on to Thomas Cole.

Very little ice and about 8 -12 in. of snow made for a very nice hike up to Thomas Cole. The weather seamed to be holding out for us with blue skies to catch some more views before starting out descent.

We had a nice gentle walk back down to Barnum Rd. About a half hour before finishing the snow had started again. We finished up at 4:30, drove back to Big Hollow Rd to grab Kevin's car and called it a day.

Another very nice winter walk in the books.
Very nice hiking with Kevin, Jerry, and Ted.

Did you see us waving to you from Cornell & Slide? We were fogged in on Wittenberg but then it cleared. Actually it was a great day for a hike. I will be submitting my hike report with a few photos shortly. Then it started snowing again in Phoenicia while we were eating dinner at Brio's. Six participants and quite tiring - hiked from 8:15 to 4:15 over Wittenberg-Cornell-Slide. There was about two feet of snow on the summit of Slide but down in the valleys nothing. Crampons were definitely necessary.
