As with most people I suspect, I have always stuck to the Blueberry Ledge trail when doing Whiteface.
Today when coming down off Whiteface I decided to take the Cutoff. From the intersection with the Blueberry Ledge trail at the upper end it is well marked and easy to follow down over the ledges. Once down in the woods it narrows quickly and appears to be little used. The trail was marked a bit a first and then not at all. It is covered with leaves and careful attention is needed to follow it. There were a couple of times when I wondered if I might have gotten off the trail but I never did.
Just when I thought I might be lost, I came on a sign indicating that I had just come out of the Sandwich wilderness area. From that point on the trail was much better defined and easy to follow. At the point where the footbridge crosses the stream to connect with the Dicey Mill trail the trail is again a bit difficult to follow but opens up again after that and is well defined all the way to the Blueberry Ledge connection.
Despite some difficulty in following the trail, this trail is an absolute gem. It's beautiful, remote and you'll have it to yourself. It definitely is much more interesting than the regular trail and worth taking if your used to following somewhat unmarked trails.![Smile :) :)](data:image/gif;base64,R0lGODlhAQABAIAAAAAAAP///yH5BAEAAAAALAAAAAABAAEAAAIBRAA7)
