Just came back from a Boy Scout winter weekend in the Catskills.....app 250 people there which maybe 175 were boys.....no snow for sledding (kids bored).....and temps were -3 to -7F without the wind chill Sat night, probably was -20 with the wind....I helped chaperone 10 boys, which 3 were new to the winter campout.....I brought xtra fleece blankets and sleeping bags for the kids......they did have fun making and feeding the fire.....

I volunteered to lead a hike Sun morning at 10 around their lake...app 1 1/2 mile loop......nobody showed up, even the boys in my troop, so i followed the red markers and went for a walk......saw a cool tunnel made by a rodent and saw where it popped out to look for stuff....saw some bobcat prints...no rabbit or deer...surprised about that.....the scouts let loggers onto their property and it's a mess....but that's how the scouts get some $.....I later walked over to a waterfall and saw "Bernoulli effect ?)....the air was being sucked under the fast moving water and it was bubbling up a little further downstream out of a tiny 3 inch type volcano....amazing....now if i didn't go hiking because nobody else didn't go i would have missed some really cool nature scenes....I did take 3 younger boys to see the falls later that afternoon....only problem was chewing on a piece of taffy....my crown came out  just thought I'd give a report...oh yea, i met someone who i might hike with and i volunteered to lead another hike next year....last thing...i came in 2nd place in the adult cooking contest...."My 1st stew"...and i made a cheap pvc pulk...it was great until I came to the gravel...

"Edit....Venturi effect, not Bernoulli "...that's what i was told

2nd place in the adult cooking contest....

What did you make, pancakes??? :)

Congrats on the winter camping weekend, sounds like you at least had the cold temps, too bad the snow wasn't there... Maybe if you had it last weekend.... :)

Sounds like you had a fun and safe trip. This is where responsible leadership pays off. Congrats.

Jay, I made a "beef stew"....all by myself....after 20 years of marriage I think this was the first real big dinner i made...7lbs of steak, 5lbs of potatos, lots of veggies and sauces....my daughter and wife hated it! But it was for the boys...(don't tell my wife but there were only 2 entries in the contest  )

Mudhook...with enough baggering from me the new boys brought their gear in a few days before the trip....I saw one boy with a 20F bag and knew right away this was a problem....I told his mom to send more blankets, we can always make a few trips to the car to carry up his gear...then i decided to drive back home and get a fleece sleeping bag for him....i'm not a scout but as a parent I kept telling them to eat/drink and move around...they did spend a few hours at night in a some what warm building doing skits and having snacks...it was their 50th anniversity...looking forward to next year...now if i could only get my own son to go...

Hey Dave, sounds like a good time had by all. Too bad there weren't any bugs to fly into the stew and add to the flavor! Well maybe a summer camp- out is in order!
