Date of Hike: 1-23-10

Trail Conditions: Conditions couldn’t have been any better. Well stamped out trails (thanks to Ed Hawkins & Co.) all the way to West Bond. Cold temps in the early morning hours but warmed to the mid 20s (maybe higher) by mid day. Beautiful sunshine and long views from the tops all day. Quite a few blowdowns to go over and around but more a nuisance than any real barrier.

Special Equipment Required: Snowshoes from beginning to end. Gallons of fluids.

Comments: Caught up to Ed Hawkins’s Pemi Traverse group on the West Bond Spur and chatted with some hiking legends – Schorman Sr, Bob M, Darcy, et al. Hoping Bob M & Darcy hook up with us for more winter hikes when we join forces again with Schorman Sr. Good thing we didn’t continue on with the Pemi Traverse group as Steve R had devastating foot issues that resulted in a finish across the suspension bridge on his hands and knees…. pitiful sight!

I’ve done the “3 Bonds in a day” hike quite a few times….never had the opportunity to hike the entire day in just 2 layers…. January 23rd was one of those rare winter days in the White Mountains.
