Winter has begun in the high peaks!
Down low, the snow was minimal (fallen leaves were still visible). As we approached the first outlook, the snow got slightly deeper and the trail got steeper, but not to the point where we needed spikes.
At the top of Boott Spur, it was clear with excellent views, as well as frigid temperatures and approximately 30 mph winds. Once above treeline and on the Davis Path, the snow got significantly deeper, with one to two foot deep snow drifts every now and then.
The Tuckerman Ravine Trail upper part was all packed down from the traffic up Mt. Washington. Three of us descended down the headwall without traction while two of us used it. Continuing our descent on the Tuckerman Ravine Trail after the Hermit Lake Shelter was quite icy, and I would say light traction is essential for right now.
Awesome day in the winter-like Presidentials! Click here to read full report and view pictures.
