Boundary peak, hiked on 10 12 15.
Boundary peak, Maine, hiked from mont gosford park, Canada. The great October weather days kept coming so I opted to take the 5 hour drive to boundary peak from the Canadian side. Thanks to all the trekkers who previously posted their hikes. Lots of good info that helped me with directions. Special thanks to Kevin R for his recent post on great driving directions which I will repost here.
Plenty of parking in sandpit at trailhead. Trail starts in the south south/east corner of sandpit. Some post give detail that the porta potty is toward the upside of pit. The porta potty got moved, so just look for the south corner for the trail. As you start on the trail, there is a game pole about 50 yds in on the left, then the trail takes a sharp right and crosses a small brook. The elevation starts right up over loose stone for about 15 minutes, then levels out and brings you to the border swath. Sand pit to swath is about 30 minutes. Take a left and follow the swath up and down, then up and down again, while passing hunters stands embedded border markers, and I border marker pillar. Boundary peak will be ahead, and very obvious. Last 10 minutes of walking is loose small stone. There is a cairn at the peak and you will find the canister in the woods about 10 feet in on the Maine side. If you are going up there soon, please bring a new 1 gallon zip lock bag to keep the log safe in the canister. Great views to the north, east and south, and familiar peaks like white cap, nkd, snow mt., sugarloaf and bigelow. Great lunch spot. Because of the ups and downs, total elevation gain is about 1230 feet and 4 plus miles in length.. 1.30 going up, and 1.15 coming down.
