Having backpacked for over 40 years this trail is in the worst condition of any trail I have ever hiked. It is in needs work both from a hiking perspective and from an environmental perspective. Much of the trail is under six inches of water with a mud base. In many sections there are no rocks to hop from. Most of the logs that still lie in the trail are virtually rotted away. All of this encourages efforts to skirt the mud holes which causes an ever widening of the holes. I would be happy to join a trail crew in the late summer when it is dry to work on replacing logs or rerouting the trail. For now, water proof boots and extra dry socks are essential. The trail to Panther is easy to follow and in good shape. Ice is forming above 3500ft.
