Trail: Bridalveil Falls

Special equipment: None yesterday. Packed trail and cold temperatures made for no-problem barebooting on styrofoam snow the whole way. I postholed only when I stepped off the trail to take a photo or for other business. I brought along snowshoes and Microspikes just in case but didn't use either.

Comments: This was just a quick up-and-back due to a very important afternoon appointment in Woodstock, VT. Temp was 13 below at the trailhead at 9:30 in the morning but there was no wind at all -- the bareboot walking was extremely pleasant, even warm. I was testing a new Osprey weekend pack (and some new long underwear) I had bought a day earlier at good sale at Farmway, and I give it a four-star rating; it's a really nice piece of equipment.

Didn't see another person the whole time, which really surprised me, as this route is very popular. Perhaps the cold kept folks away. It did warm up some -- back at the car for the drive home, the temp was up to 14 above.

Oh, that very important appointment? It was to pick up my new hiking companion. Meet Tuckerman:

He's a rescue dog, a stray found in Virginia. There's some German Shepherd in him, some Lab, and a goulash of lord knows what else. Friends at the Society for Animal Protection let me know he was available, and boy, I'm glad they did. Tuck's the sweetest puppy ever -- even our cat, Attitash, already likes him. He's 14 weeks and already 22 pounds; he'll be a big boy when he's full grown as well as a real friend in the mountains, I'm sure.
