LT/AT from MA-VT border to Seth Warner Shelter, then Broad Brook Trail to Pownal, VT. Entire trail is exceptionally well-blazed. After up to two inches of rain on Saturday, much of the LT holds standing water, though with foliage well-diminished, it's easy to whack around any large areas of water.

Broad Brook Trail is also excellently blazed - this is fortunate, because its limited use would make following it down the valley difficult in some places. All water crossings are difficult to challenging. We simply waded across and let the heat of the hike dry our feet as much as possible. The first two crossings can be bushwhacked around - 350 yards plus or minus. Since both Broad Brook and the trail are in the bottom of a deep cut, some bushwhacking involves climbing steeply.

Guidebook says that the crossings may be challenging in spring. They will also be challenging after any significant amount of precipitation. Much of the trail follows old woods roads, but there are also good lengths where the trail clings to the side of steep hills, at or close to the angle of repose.

Though there was no rain, skies were overcast for the 7 hour hike (including a 2.5 mile roadwalk back to the car at Pine Cobble Trail. No VFTT today. Do this trail ONLY during prolonged dry spells and still be prepared to wear crocs or get your boots and calves wet on the crossings.
