Party of 8 skied into Roaring Brook from Abol Bridge CG. Cold and windy conditions. Tote road to Togue Gatehouse was pretty descent conditions, thin in a few spots from snowmachines and windy conditions. From there conditions were great for skiing and dragging all our sleds. The 12 plus miles was done from 6 to 6 1/2 hours by all. Zero degrees inside the bunkhouse when we entered it but warmed it up nicely in a few hours.
Plans were to continue the next day to Chimney Pond to stay over night there. Didnt happen though ... No one was following the next day so we decided, after asking Rob Tyce (sp) the Ranger at Chimney Pond, to stay at Roaring Brook and do a day hike up to the Pond. Five out of eight made it up to Chimney Pond in temps of - teens with winds gusting from 30 to 45 mph. Three of us turned back at the Basin Ponds to retreat to calmer conditions down below. Great snowshoeing though, at any rate.
Park Ranger at Chimney said that he had some gusts much higher than those just mentioned and that during those types of conditions that he wouldnt allow anyone to summit ( not in the plans anyway).
All made it down in warm shape to enjoy a nice community meal . The next morning woke up to minus 24 with the winds howling pretty hard still making the 4 1/2 hour ski out a little chilly to say the least, althoough upon departure it warmed up a bit to minus 12.
A few miles before Togue Gatehouse Rob came by with his snowmachine and trailer and offer to tow our sleds but we decided to keep on pulling them?
The Tote Road has started to bump up so I guess the Snowmachines will probably opt for the ITS soon!
Wish we went to Millinocket for some food so we could have bumped into G O and company but decided to get closer to home and pigged out in Bangor.
First time in the Park in the Winter. Quite an experience.

Sounds like you had a nice time and made the best of the frigid arctic conditions, "ytmountains". I'll bet you'll wish for a bit warmer conditions on your next visit there. The problem is you just put down your park reservation money on a certain weekend and just hope for the best. Were you planning to climb a peak or two on this trip?

Great pics of BSP

ytmountains - Your pics brought back memories of our trip to Roaring Brook and Chimney Pond three winters ago. We had very cold temps while at Chimney Pond - one night with the wind chill the ranger told us that it was -80 degrees! We had only one day for climbing and some of the group got Hamlin Peak. The rest of the time was too cold, and on Friday when we woke up to snow blowing, we were out of there! Wonderful, magical place in the winter, never the less.
