I know I could probably go online and check this out myself, but, there are so many rules and reg's at Baxter that reading them makes me silly... sooooooo

does anyone know if they allow tents to be set up at a lean-to site as long as the total site capacity is not exceeded?

No tents.

7. CAMPING: Camping is permitted only in authorized campgrounds and campsites. Tents may not be pitched in lean-to sites. Because campgrounds may be distant from the gatehouse, campers should check driving times and plan accordingly. Except as otherwise permitted by the Director, campers must register at the gatehouse no later than 8:30 P.M. The latest check-out time is 11:00 A.M., and the earliest check-in time is 1:00 P.M.

Steady on, my friend, one step at a time (sorry, couldn't resist), ten deep breaths, visualize Katahdin, think moose & bear and relatively uncrowded backcountry, and you'll get through this. Do not feel isolated; there are many adult children of Baxter State Park Rules & Regs.

Is it wrong that I read this as:

In the summer months, they definitely don't allow it but I've seen this reg ignored in the winter lots of times - even with the rangers' consent. I think it's one of the few rules that gets stretched.

if it's bug shelter you seek, try a light tarp over the entrance. of course, it doesn't keep them all out but it keeps the numbers way down.

Looks like you have a key press problem on your PC! :D

Bear vaults: You can tie it up, but you don't need to. Just let it lie there. Bears can probably move larger rocks that you can anyway! :D You don't want to give the bear anything to leverage against. Some have suggested putting bright tape on it for visibility in case it gets dragged away.

Have fun, it's a great place!

I think someone played a prank on you and switched the "Q" with the "S" key :D

I also remember going through the whole process when I first went to Baxter and just kind of getting annoyed (who's to tell me that I can't camp in lean-tos more than 10 miles apart)...
...but it's so worth it, even the $18/night which seems a little high to some. Those guys are doing an excellent job up there.

I have to qecond thiq opinion. I alqwayq grumble about the Baxter regulationq until I get there...then it'q all worth it.

Aq far aq the open lean-to, tell them that a bug net won't keep an angry, hungry, blood-thirqty bear out! :D ;)
Qeriouqly, though, they'll like it once they qee it. It'q different then a tent, but haq plenty of advantageq. And, take it aq an opportunity to teach how unlikely it iq that a bear would eat them, and learn about the real habitq of bearq.

P.Q. It'q really hard to type without a q. :D

This day is just going down the tubes....6/6/06....I'm afraid to see what else will go wrong in the next few hours...think i need to check the school pc tomorrow..hope it didn't mess up your heads...
