Hikin' the scree on Shasta....
Date of Hike:1/26/08

Trail Conditions: Packed out with some ice.

Birchtoft to Cascade Link: Packed Trail = bareboots - some people wore snowhoes - no need.

Spellmen to Pumpelly: Lots of ice on this steeper trail - most of us wore crampons, but microspikes, etc.. would be good too. Nice ice on this trail - even got some frontpointing in a nice 10 foot section off trail - davebear tops it out!!! Kept crampons on to summit due to laziness to take them off, you can stay on ice and snow all the way up - but lots of bare rock above treeline - easily barebootable.

Red Spot; 2 people went up that to pumpelly and that was barebootable
Pumpelly; 2 people came down that - barebootable.

White Arrow back to Toll Road: upper half some ice that crampons helped on. Once down to toll road; bareboots.

Special Equipment Required: winter gear.

Comments: nice hike with BoB, Davebear, Woody48, Stev-o and Dave and Lori. Nice sunny windless warm day to do a chill out hike and goof off.

The whole mountain is barebootable,. but crampons make life easier and make you look cooler like wearing versace at the clubs. Everyone summits the mighty monadnock!!! Great peak - Lots of bang for the buck.
