Hi there !

I did my homeworks don't worry but I'm just curious as of what you guys might give me as advices. Here is the deal :

-Climbing Whitney by the mountaineer's route July 28th-29th (info/link please ?). I don't plan to bring cramons/ice axe along...
-Climbing Boundary Peak (info/link please ?)
-Where to stay for free in most south/central National Parks (Sequoia/Kings Canyon, Yosemite, Death Valley, etc.).

Thanks a bunch

As far as Boundary Peak goes, this guy has a bunch of info:

http://www.muellerworld.com/mtn/boundary.html

I can't vouch for the accuracy and I don't know if we (Tmax and I) will be using it, but it's there.

Wheeler peak (2nd highest in NV) is supposedly the more 'grandier' peak as Boundary is in very much the middle of nowhere, but of course, it isn't the state highpoint. :p

If you have a chance, go out to Montgomery Peak which isn't far from the Boundary Peak if you get an early start.

As far as free lodging near Whitney and stuff, I'm sure Kevin Rooney will respond here, he's local and knows a ton about the area.... in fact, do a search, I vaguely recall this question coming up somewhere in the past here on VfTT. I could be wrong but check.

Is that the "normal" route ? I was thinking of doing this one instead but I'm lacking pictures to know what I will have in front of me (only GPS coords) :

Which one easier, faster, better, etc.

Mountaineer's Route Advice

Bring an ice axe and crampons. There's been more than a few fatalities on this route involving climbers who lacked them.

Check out Summit Post for info on Whitney's Mountaineer's Route. Usually done with crampons, ice axe, ropes, etc, but what the heck? maybe it has melted out. As for free camping - Death Valley has lots, but can't speak for the others. Would check out the the respective National Park site for each, or perhaps reading TR's on Summit Post might give you some leads.

When I did Whitney, I stayed in Death Valley. There are a few campgrounds at aruond 6-7K feet, and you can do a morning climb of Telescope Peak, which is a bit over 11K feet. Death Valley isn't too far from Whitney, and not that far from Boundry Peak. IIRC, the higher elevation campgrounds are free. but you pay something for a 7 day pass for the park.

One thing that I found interesting staying in Death Valley. At 10:00AM, I was in snow, at 11K feet wearing a hat and coat, then at 2:00 PM, I was over 200 feet below sea level, in 110F temperatures.

Thanks !
Well, usually routes in Canadian Rockies are snow/ice free at the end of July, early August and I though it would be the same for Whitney.

Dry enough so I can go around icy patches at least !

Pete,

So you descended 11,000 feet in 4 hours? At an average of 3,000 feet/hour, that sounds STEEP!
That Pete's a remarkable guy!

Actually, the trailhead at Mahagony Flats is around 8K, so the elevation change on the hike itself is about 3K. But, driving from the TH thru Wildrose to the visitor center at -200 is another matter.
