Started out trying to find trailhead near River Rd. & Camel's Hump Rd. (The trailhead I actually used is near another Camel's Hump Rd.)
Forget this- it's an awful, long (8? miles) mud road which even Mad Max in the movie Road Warrior would find maddening. When I got to a point that looked like the trailhead where someone had scrawled, "Hump 11.4 miles", I turned around.
Finding the other (Burrows Tr.) trailhead was easy with the Delorme Atlas, the hiker's best friend. Finding the trailhead sometimes requires more effort than scaling Owl's Head slide. Just be aware that Camel's Hump Rd. isn't signed.
Burrows Trail was steep in some areas, but nothing out of the ordinary. I didn't have any traction on the whole time, but did slip a little bit, especially after turning onto the Long Trail, which is probably why I bought Stablicers tonight at EMS for $48. To my chagrin, I found out that REI has them on sale for $29.
According to the map at the Burrows Trail trailhead, there is a B-24 (WWII bomber like the B-17) wreckage just past the SE corner of the junction of the Alpine Trail & the Long Trail, .2 miles past the summit. According to another hiker I met, this is true but there is only a bit of the fuselage left, probably obscured by the snow. The Long Trail Guide doesn't mention this wreckage.
In any case, from the summit there was enough of a tease of a view to know that it would have been gorgeous. Winds were high, but since the summit is all rocks, sort of like Mt. Cascade in the ADK, I was able to brace myself for blur-free pix. There is also another viewpoint somewhat sheltered by small trees on the left hand side (coming from the Burrows Tr./Long Trail Junction) about .2(?) miles before the summit.
No signs on summit, but it's fairly obvious, everything leads down.
Some ice present, but I bare-booted the entire trip and slipped maybe once or twice. The snow was so well packed that to have taken my snowshoes off of my pack would have been a waste of time. Butt-skiing made the descent go by real quickly!
Great hike- just save it for a day w/ blue skies, the view will be well worth it!
