I planned to hang out with my friend Kate today, but we were not sure what to do. The forecast didn't look great for this weekend, so we were not sure if we were going to do a hike or do something more urban. Upon waking up this morning and seeing a brilliant blue sky, we made the decision to go hiking. I decided Camel's Hump would be a good decision, since it has fantastic 360 degree views from the summit and was only about an hour's drive away. So we drove down to Waterbury and then took the road in to Camel's Hump. I swear there used to be a sign at the junction of the dirt road to Camel's Hump from the river road, but today there was no street sign or sign pointing to the road to Camel's Hump. Maybe they took those down? Anyhoo, the road in was not too bad up until the last few hundred feet where the tires were spinning to make it up into the parking lot.

We arrived around 12:30, a nice late slacker hour to get going on the hike. The hike is only 7.4 miles and 2645 vertical feet, so there was no rush to get going. We went up the Monroe trail and enjoyed the hike with all kinds of people who were passing us on the way up. It was quite humid out and pretty warm, so we took plenty of breaks to snap pictures of scenery, and just us in general doing stupid poses. The ascent up the mountain via the Monroe trail was moderate but not too steep. After a few hours, who knows how many, we got to the top and enjoyed it with all kinds of people. We took a few dozen photos, enjoyed the 360 views and ate some ok raspberry wanna be granola bars. They weren't too bad. We walked all over the bald summit and took pictures of just about everything. My friend accidently walked on the arctic crabgrass, and I was waiting to hear a ranger scream at her, but it did not happen today. Normally they are pretty vigilant with people who stray off the beaten path up there. But nothing today.

We decided to descend via the Dean trail, and had some great views coming down off of the open summit. Lots of great rock formations up there! The descent was rather mundane, nothing too exciting. We came across a couple of guys who were thru hiking the Long trail and were heading north. We asked them if they knew where the plane wreck was, but they were not sure. The sign at the bottom of the trails say that it is only 100 feet off of the summit, but I can never seem to see where it is. It would be great to see any pictures if someone has some of the site. I am pretty intrigued by it. I believe it was a B-24 plane that crashed back in 1944. The rest of the walk down went by rather quickly and we got back to the parking lot around 6.

I thought I remembered a great watering hole just up the road, so we headed back towards Bolton. I never came across this watering hole that I remembered from a few years back, I guess my mind was playing tricks on me and I was in the wrong location. But we found a nice pizza joint a mile off the highway and scarfed down some food. It was soooo yummy. Well that's it,
here are my pics of the day.

Plane crash and watering hole

Nice trip report. For future reference the plane crash site is locate on the Alpine Trail. If you're taking the Monroe trail up you'll come to a junction with the Alpine trail .6 mile before the summit. Head west at the junction and you'll come to the crash site.

There is a great watering hole in Waterbury. I always mention it when I'm talking about hikes in the Stowe/Waterbury area. It's right on the main street in Waterbury and it's called the Alchemist. Brew their own beer and have great food. Weekends they serve beer at 3 pm and food at 4, I think.

Glad you had a good time.

Thanks for the info on the plane crash site! As far as the watering hole, i was actually referring to a swimming hole, i just didn't word it very well. I think my brain is tired. I always appreciate the beer advice though!
