camping sites near Mendon &/or Dorsett?

We've stayed at Emerald Lake State Park and it was fine. I forget whet we paid - (this was 2003: maybe $8 ? maybe $12 ?). We stayed in a lean-to but there are plenty of tent sites. Since the lean-tos were available, we took one. Report

Gifford Woods State Park has awesome sites and a great washhouse.

Also, there are some side of the road sites along the Danby Mt Tabor Rd which is sort of halfway between the two (and free, but no services)

Am also wondering if you couldn't tent somewhere off Wheelerville Road? Not too many homes along sections there, and IIRC much of the land there is public - watershed for the City of Rutland. Don't know how receptive they are to public use as they used to prohibit people from having horses on their properties in that area out of concern for water contamination.

I do have a fond spot for Gifford Woods, having grown up a few miles north of there. We used to go there on school field trips and picnics - even for kids growing up in a remote rural area it seems liked a magical place with its tall trees.
