Trails: Kinsman Ridge to Cannon summit, Taft ski run to Mittersill, old Mittersill ski run to Tuckerbrook Road, then snowless XC ski trails to Lafayette Road in Franconia.
Conditions: Monorail begins on KRT at 2,400 feet. Very icy and steep in many places from 2,700 feet to the KRT's big turn to the left at 3,400 feet. Below summit, rocky ledges bare. Taft ski run mostly snow, some bare patches. Top of Mittersill bare. Mittersill ski runs snow-covered and icy to 2,700 feet. After that, patches of snow to 2,500 feet, lots of mud.
Special equipment: Traction absolutely necessary up KRT to Cannon summit. MicroSpikes OK, but crampons probably better across the rocky slides, 2,700 feet to 3,400 feet. MicroSpikes probably OK on Taft ski run; I used snowshoes. Snowshoes and MicroSpikes on Mittersill paths.
Comments: Wet, gray weather, but a wonderful hike, especially down the old Mittersill ski run to the top of Tuckerbrook Road in Franconia.
