I'd been reading descriptions and seeing photos/videos of people skiing in the early Oct snowstorm in New England all week. It was driving me a bit nuts at work so I was determined to get out on Saturday for a day on snow. Cannon was the closest place and the trip reports sounded pretty good, so I arranged to meet Adam at the Park & Ride at 5:30 and off we went.

There is no snow until right before you arrive at Cannon, about a mile or so before the exit. It's a little worrying, but eventually there is all is. We parked and a few other folks we'd talked to on email arrived at the parking lot. We seemed to be the only ones there at 7:45, so we put on our skis and off we went.

There is a cat track going up to the top of the lower chair making for a fairly easy skin, if it wasn't for my out-of-shape thighs and lungs. The others were going to take a run down from there, Adam and I elected to continue higher, possibly to the top. At the top of the detachable quad things looked good so on up we went.

We stopped on the deck of the tram station which was out of the pretty steady wind. After removing skins and bundling up, we started down our first run of the 2005-6 season.

The skiing was OK, not fantastic like it must have been right after the snow fell. There were rocks and some bare/icy patches. Frankly, the main problem was that my legs turned into al dente pasta and my skiing was underwhelming. Ah, to be old and out-of-shape. We met a party of 5 that was skiing their 5th day of the year, they were probably responsible for the majority of the tracks that were up there.

Eventually we got down to where we'd left the others and found them skinning back up Zoomer which they reported was fantastic. I was spent and needed food, so we paused and ate and rehydrated. That made a huge difference, I felt must better after that. Since the snow sounded good we went down Zoomer. It was quite good snow, the best we'd found on the mountain. We skinned back up and came down Rocket next, finding even more untracked patches and more consistantly deep snow.

We hiked back out the to cars around 1:30, not wanting to over do it on the first day. What an October, a fine way to start the season.

I have some video as well, but I need to clean it up and put it in a format that makes sense. All the pictures are here.

Wow. Looks like tons of snow. How much, if any, was manmade covering to what Mother Nature already dumped?

I couldn't believe seeing it snow like the dickens here in Salem, Mass., yesterday. It made the Halloweeny types look even more surreal than usual!

There's no manmade snow up there, that's all natural. There was about 3' up top but that has settled down to about 2' by the time we got up there. We arrived around 7:45AM and spend all day in winter. When we left we got about 1 mile down 93 and noticed that there was no snow! It is really localized to the mountains, but that's where it's needed. :)

Metsky,

Whatever your day job is down there in Beantown, you are wasting your talents by sticking with it. ;) Those latter three shots are fabulous, worth of publication in any number of venues. Take a day off to find some way to peddle them (and your talent generally), and from now on the gas money is a tax-deductible expense.

Thanks for posting them!

Can I just say ...

*drool*

Gorgeous shots, and I am incredibly jealous of the day. I want to go play on my skis, too!!!

I would like to add my drool to the mix! :D

Got to get myself some half decent telemark skis for the coming season....it looks like it's going to be a good one!

Ah, you free-heelers... I'm looking at your shots and thinking... I gotta be out ona board and then I see pix of some others doing just that... like Prino said, add my drool to the pool!!

I'm going to remind all of you in March after a long, long winter how you felt back in October!! God wanted there to be fall. Let's not take it away...

Love the shot of Adam going down with the sun chasing him... great shot. Nice sky to have above besides...

Hey, I'm not complaining about the skiing in Oct. But we met folks who'd been up there 5 days straight and they were talking about how good the skiing was on Wed. It's all relative.

This could be my longest ski season yet.

i also got the chance to ski that weekend. I was at Cannon on the 29th as well, but me and 2 of my friends mainly did a small hill at the base for our first time out this season. I've been skiing off and on the past fews years and onl this year have i finally got m own setup. That just means more skiing for me this year, and what a way to begin, 2 days before Halloween!!

I got pics from the day on my website bintrepid81.fotopages.com if you're interested in comparing.
