Is car camping in that area feasible? Legal? We are trying to climb White Cap, Boundary, Kennebago Divide, and Cupsuptic Snow.

There used to be "permit" campsites in the area shown in the DeLorme Atlas where you can camp for free but need a permit for fires - check at Cupsuptic ranger station.

I've spent dozens of nights at these - saved a lot of $$ and often miles from anybody but moose.

If you take the Bear Brook route to NKD/Whitecap, you can drive in a ways and there are lots of flat grassy areas along the road. There is a beautiful campsite at the junction of the Canada Rd and Wiggle Brook Road but with the bridge gone, it's on the wrong side of the river. There are also lots of spots like turnouts, little sand pits, short dead ends along most of the roads in that area.

No Camping signs

This weekend I noticed "NO CAMPING" signs posted at the start of the Morton Cut-off road, the Burnt Mountain road, the Tim Pond / Lincoln Pond road, and on several side roads, gravel pits, and open grassy spots.

Me thinks they don't want you camping!

I'd suggest too that you talk to the Forest Ranger in Cupsuptic about the location of "authorized permit sites".

The lands you pass through on the way to the peaks in questions are owned by a few different entities so don't assume b/c one landowner doens't wanting you camp means you can't camp on any of them. One of the larger landowners there never really wanted it. The ownership has changed and the new owners still aren't too cozy with it. I believe that there are no maintained MFS sites on that ownership.

Like Onestep called, check in with the rangers at Cupsuptic (864-5545) for specifics.

Cathedral Pines Campground in Eustis

Is a good campground for car camping, they have pretty decent showers and toilets and are hiker tolerant. Prices are reasonable.

We're booked at Cathedral Pines for a few days. Is it close enough to try Cupsuptic Snow, Kennebago Divide, and White Cap?

That is the "Traditional" starting point for these peaks, back when the 4K club led those peaks every Labor Day

There is a private campground at Cupsuptic Lake that's closer

I personally prefer to camp free with no showers over a longer drive on logging roads every day
