Last Sunday's hike brought us to Carr Mountain in Wentworth, NH. It was #76 on the Fire Tower List for us. The weather was not promising for the first day of our vacation, so after checking the forecasts for all the tower sites we were hoping to hit this week (all had rain all day), we had to settle for a more southern site, Carr. Carr would have made a nice day trip from our house, but we were still closer than home and getting another tower off the list is better than not getting one off the list.
The weather forecast called for partly cloudy skies with a chance of rain until 11:00AM. We arrived at the Three Ponds trailhead and as we loaded up and started on the trail, it started raining! There were 3 geocaches we intended on searching for. We found the first one and as for the other 2, well it was too wet for one and too slippery for the one on the summit. As we continued on the trail, the rain picked up in intensity.
Right at the beginning of the trail, off to the right, someone hung a painted picture of a tree. At .5 miles we turned on to the Carr mountain Trail. This trail is blazed in yellow also and before I forget to mention it, the trail coming down is blazed in yellow sometimes and other times in blue, couldn't figure that one out.
Carr Mountain Trail is 2.9 miles long and the only real water crossing is Sucker Brook, which wasn't overly difficult, but with the current rain making the rocks slippery, caution was necessary. We didn't feel that the trail ever got overly steep, we had heard the side we went up was the easier side. The rain did make some of the rocks and slabs slippery though.
Our biggest disappointment was with the fog, eventually the rain did stop and not start up again after taking the raincoats off again, was the fog, it never lifted. We got to the summit and everything was wet and really slick to walk on. We did get to see the tower and it was strange to see a summit that was far from flat having a tower once stand on it.
We did post the video on YouTube for anyone who might be interested...
