Today we hiked a peak on the Y-Alpine list - Carr Mountain, which is just west of Rte 93 by Exit 28. Nice easy trail - took us a very casual 2 hours to reach the summit. No views along the way, but some views looking North and Northwest from the top.

Photos and map are located at:

Is the trail generally easy to follow? I plan on hiking it soon, whenever I can get out of Chester and go north!!! How about views in general?? I saw the pics and they looked nice even though it was a little grown in. All I need are some views and I'll be happy.

The trail is very easy to follow - there has been recent trail work to cut away the overgrowth. View - from the top only, but pick a nice day like today and it is very enjoyable.

Was the Tupperware case with the summit register still there?

In light of Cantdog's comment and the summit jar I found on South Percy recently, this begs the question: how many of the Y-Alpine peaks have summit registers on them? Considering every summit on this list is supposed to have a trail on it, I'm surprised any of them still have registers.

I was on both North Percy and Sugarloaf (North Country) recently, and neither one seemed to have a register. Then again, since both seemed to have had maintained trails on them for some time, this wasn't surprising. As for Magalloway, I seem to recall there was a register (and it must have been in an obvious place too, since this was back in the days before I was looking for such things). I want to say it was located around the base of the fire tower, but since it's been four years since I was there, I forget the exact details. It certainly wasn't in a cool summit jar like what's on most of the trailless 3k peaks.

Mosquito Mtn. has a similar register stored inside a hollow cairn, but there is definitely a trail from the Moxie access road. I don't think it's >3000', but Papa Bear might confirm or deny that in a matter of minutes.

Mosquito Mtn is 2215'.

FWIW, the cannister was on Carr when I was there in June.

How long has there been a cannister on Carr? I was there few years ago and did not see one. There was a lot of broken glass up there then.

North Percy wouldn't have a canister, but South Percy didn't have a trail on it until recently (after the Cohos Trail opened) and even still it's more of a herd path than a trail. Went up there last fall on an AMC trip (thanks Bill Bowden!) but don't remember a canister. (Edit: I also don't remember there not being a canister, either.)

S.Percy - I was up there 6/03 and there was a cannister/register. Maybe it has been removed, but there used to be one there.

I never saw the one on Carr.

I was on South Percy on 9/24/2005, and found the register jar to be in a very obvious place, tied to a short tree near the center of the small summit clearing. Judging from the dates of some of the other entries, the register has been up there for years.

I made it up to Carr last weekend, and while on the summit I looked all over for the canister. Since I was unable to find it, I think it might have been removed since June. Considering all the trail work that seems to have occurred lately on the eastern approach (new trail signs, trimmed branches) perhaps its removal coincided with that.

While we're on the topic of Carr, from the summit there appeared to be a subsidiary peak to the south that looked about the same elevation. Does anyone know how much lower it is? Plus, it looked like a herd path headed in that general direction, but after following it for about five minutes it just about petered out. Does that lead to anything in particular?

Yes, there are a couple more bumps about the same height as the tower site

I walked over them and down a lot of the S ridge looking for the Learjet, don't remember any paths up there.

Carr ridge

I seem to recall that there was a fire lane cut N to S over the entire Carr ridge in about 1948. From oral history by an old man named "Pick" who lived in Rumney for many years.
