Perfect day, who can ask for anything more?
The trip was moi, GetawayGirl, Seeker, and El Jeffe. The trailhead parking lot was pretty much full when we arrived at 9:30, we squeezed in next to the USFS truck. There was a car parked next to us with a NH plate reading ATLTPCT; I figured they knew what they were doing. Temps were chilly but it was clear that things would warm up soon, and so they did. It was very close to shorts and t-shirt weather, right on the edge, and no wind.
We hit Signal Ridge and met up with lots of folks sunning themselves before and after summitting. We only stopped for a bit before pushing on to the tower. There we met Kevin, who I'd hiked with on Waumbek last year, who had just finished his 48 and was handing out Peppridge Farms cookies to hikers as the reached the tower. Way to go Kevin!
A huge crop of folks left the tower just as we arrived so it wasn't that busy up top. We had lunch and took in the views and all of a sudden we were the only ones up there. That was nice. After the appropiate amount of time we headed down. My feet, which were bothering me most of the summer started hurting on the descent. Talking with Amy it finally dawned on me that I'm dealing with Plantar Fasciitis. Joy, rapture. At least I know what it is and can start dealing with that.
We also ended up alone on Signal Ridge, another blissfully quiet moment in a busy day. The hike out was slow but steady, we reached the cars a little after 5:00, changed, and were on the road pretty quickly. Coming into Lincoln on the Kanc we ended up in Columbus Day traffic jam; it took us 45 minutes to get from Lincoln Woods to I-93! At the end of the day was homemade squash soup, pizza, and ginger pudding, with red wine as needed. Quite lovely.
