Once again the weather was not there for us…we had hoped to hit Isolation – up Glen Boulder and back out over Boott Spur. The 90 % chance of rain was certainly materializing and Rols decided to stay home and get rid of his lingering cold. Tuco and I had another agenda – let’s hike! We opted for Carter Dome as Tuco still needed it and it is a pretty sheltered route.
Breaking new records for the alarm clock I got up at 1:30 and left the house at 2am to meet Tuco at his house for the ride up. It was mainly drizzling while we were driving and while we geared up in the pack room at Pinkham. – I am so glad we did that as it was totally pouring at the Nineteen Mile Brook trailhead. We got out of the car and on the trail in about 90 seconds flat at 5:55am. Luckily, the rain was pretty short lived and it really turned out to be a real nice day for hiking. We decided to head up the trail and then up to the summit via the Carter Dome Trail. This was to be my fourth time on Carter Dome in less than three years – and I still have never been on Mount Hight – three trips it was raining with no visibility and once my cousins seven-year-old daughter was with us and we did not want to extend the trip.
The rain sure kept us moving at a good clip. We reached the junction with the Carter Dome Trail in one hour and made it up to Zeta Pass quite quickly as well. Zeta would be my favorite camping spot it were legal…what an idyllic spot. It is so lush and green, especially on a wet day. We continued up and marveled at the whacked out signs going up towards the summit. If you look at all of the signs between Carter Dome and Zeta Pass the math so does not add up. I was thinking we entered a time warp or something.
Anyways, we continued up the moderate grades and made the summit around 9:45am – time for a very early lunch with no views. We hung around for a few minutes and headed back. About halfway back to Zeta Pass we came across the first hikers we had seen all day – a couple that were enjoying the day. We would only see four other people all day long. Too bad the early rains scared everyone away today as it turned out to be quite nice on the descent with occasional sunshine and lots of mosquitoes (bug spray worked very well.)
We got back to the trailhead at 1:00pm, got dry shirts on and headed back south for a couple of steaks and a couple of beers. Another great day in the hills. I believe this was number 30 for Tuco
