The 19 Mile trail was well packed right up to the Carter Dome trail. From what I could see it was packed out the rest of the way up.

When we started up the Carter Dome trail it was obvious it had a good base but was covered in fresh snow. The snow at the beginning was no more than an inch deep and I continued with the micro-spikes, but as we progressed the snow became increasingly deep and I eventually switched to snowshoes. Between Zeta pass and the top the fresh snow was 6 to 10 inches deep.

On the way up neither the trail to South Carter nor the trail to Mt. Height had been broken out. An AMC group took care of the Mt. Height trail and on my return I found the South Carter trail somewhat broken out.

On the way back I found the Carter Dome trail to be packed solid. A few people came up the Carter-Moria trail so that is broken out also.

The stream crossings on the Carter Dome trail were frozen over. There are a couple of blowdowns between Zeta pass and Carter Dome that are a bit pesky, but you can get through.

This was VFTT day on the Carters. Almost everyone I met on the trail today recognized Lauky.

On my return to the 19 mile parking about 3:00 PM there were at least 35 cars parked there. With all that traffic today, the trails should be barebootable all the way to the top right now.

There are definitely some advantages to leaving a bit after the rush at this time of year on the popular trails as they are quickly broken out.
