Ice rail from pond quickly dry trail on the steep open rock steps. Once into greenery, about 3800', snow rail and 3 feet of snow which is soft. We barebooted up carefully negotiating the snow rail, but wore crampons and/or microspikes for the trip down. Took longer than normal due to snow and rails. The snow was soooo soft that even snowshoers were sinking in. Don't bother. Long pants to avoid bleeding when postholing, poles for outriggers, and traction most helpful. No blowdowns. 19 mile trail is wet albeit beautiful to follow the raging river. Gortex boots and gaiters helpful. No deep mud to avoid. No blowdowns. A great day on the trails, and didn't see another sole. Stayed at the hut - they are rebuilding the bunkhouses. Water via spring is right outside the hut door, but not running inside yet.
