Spent the weekend with MEB, Marsha,Spencer,Giggy and Artex!!! What a jam packed weekend we all had.
We began our adventure camping out Friday night at Barnes field. We met up with Giggy and Spencer at the campsite and enjoyed a roaring fire along with a nice cold beer and yummy smores. We had light winds thoughout the night and awoke to a light dusting of snow on our tents.
Saturday morning MEB, Marsha and I headed to the Carters and Giggy and Spencer headed out to do some ice climbing. We decided do the Middle and South Carter loop trail, starting at the Imp and descending the Nineteen-mile Brook trail. . Along the trail we encountered a few blow downs and some snow drifts atop of Middle and South Carter, making for interesting travel. For the most part, the day was spent on well travelled trails, without the need for snowshoes or crampons. We summited both Middle and South but opted to save the Dome for another day. For we were going to be hiking into Tucks that evening for a night at Harvard cabin, and still had to re-pack at Pinkham for the summit trip on Sunday!! We were happy with our decision.
Sat afternoon MEB, Marsha and I headed up to Harvard cabin with the moonlight leading our way. We met up with Spencer and Giggy at the cabin where we enjoyed a nice meal, warm fire and shared our day with eachother..... Spencer, Jesse (caretaker )and I partook in a rousing game of Trivial pursuit : ) later that evening.
We awoke Sunday morning to lightly falling snow and chilly temps. We met Artex at the trail head of Lion's head and started up to the summit around 7:30. The trail was very steep and tricky in some sections, making it very challenging but very rewarding when accomplished!
As we approached the top of Lion's Head the winds picked up and we discovered the further along we went the less visibilty we had. We were careful to watch for the cairns and with the leadership of Giggy,Spencer and Artex we reached the summit within 3 hours.
We tagged the sign, took some pics and of course, had a group hug! We ventured down to the shelter of the summit building alcove where we enjoyed some hot soup (thanks to Spencer )and some yummy chicken cutlets( thanks to MEB)!
We headed back down to the cabin where we arrived safe and sound and vey happy with the days's accomplishment! We got back to Pinkham around 12:30 and headed down to Conway. Where we spent some down time, enjoying a yummy late lunch, with lots of laughs and recaps of our weekend events.
Thanks MEB, Marsha, Giggy, Spencer and Artex for a wonderful time and thanks to you Giggy for planning the Washington summit trip!!! The leadership and support of the group made for a safe and happy trip in hopes of returning for another great adventure: )

Hi KMAC, MEB, and Marsha,

It was a pleasure meeting the 3 of you near S Carter on Saturday and I'm glad to hear your trip was a complete success. It does sound like Sunday was a bit more of a challenge, but I think the overall weather for the weekend couldn't be beat.
Also glad you didn't bump into any leprechauns ;)
Take care and looking forward to meeting on the trail again someday,
Bill

Great trip report and pics Kmac! Nice to hear more about your adventures in the days prior. I had a blast hiking with you guys yesterday! :D

Wow, Kmac, I hope you can link pics #1964-66 together. Does it seem that one of the best days to hike is the day following a snow storm? Clear blue sky and fresh snow.
BTW What was the hiker with the red pack and blue gaiters carrying..a long aluminum colored object (in Spencer's photos)?

Great pictures Spencer! The ones with everyone climbing up into the semi-whiteout look especially cool.

I think what your asking about is a piece of equipment called a snow picket used for ice climbing, I believe that's what they call it. Check out the rei web-site for further explanation.
I had the best time hiking that day, picture perfect!! Cloudless blue skies and snow covered trees!!! I loved it!

That is a snow picket for snow climbing - (think an ice screw for snow) spencer and I were with a group to climb south gully in huntington on the sat - but avalanche was too high -

those are basically the sat pix you see - we dropped our gear at the cabin and we met with the rest of the crew that night and did lions head the next day (sunday) - so the picket, rope, etc.. was for south gully -that type of gear is not needed for lions head winter route. - or any of the normal hiking trails in winter

once above lions head on sunday - the cone was socked in pretty good - maybe 100 ft visablity - not bad for george in winter as winds were low - but still not the best I have seen - as day went on - weather improved - but we were on the summit pretty early - 10am or so??
