Many of the trails in the Lake Region Conservation Trust's Castle in the Clouds network in the Ossipee Range are old carriage roads, lacking a bit in charisma. I discovered a terrific one yesterday, however - the Bald Knob Connector, which joins the Shannon Brook Trail to the Castle with the Bald Knob Trail, .4 mile north of the Knob. A fellow working on the Castle grounds told me it is nearly new - about a year old. Marked by two-toned (yellow and aqua) blazes, it winds throgh hardwood and hemlock groves, has Lake views at the midpoint and includes an unusual display of "columnar jointing" (as in Ulster's Giants Causeway, on a grander scale). Pictures are here.
