If you are traveling into the Catskills on Saturday, September 12 from the east; you should be aware that NY Route 23A will be closed from Palenville to Tannersville between 1 and 4:30 pm for a Volunteer Fireman's parade. A short notice was in the Kingston Daily Freeman. Temporary highway signs are also currently posted near Palenville and Hunter.

I suspect that the parade route is only from Haines Falls to Tannersville, and if that is the case you might be able to drive from Palenville up as far as the Kaaterskill Falls trailhead. However, you would not be able to go much farther and/or reach the road to the North Lake State Park during the closure.

From the northeast, Cairo, you may use NY Routes 23 and 296 to reach Hunter. From the southeast, Kingston, you may use NY Routes 28 and 214 to reach Hunter.

For those who like to live on the wild side; you may also go up the steep, narrow, yet paved Platte Clove Road from West Saugerties. This road provides access to the eastern section of the Devil's Path. You may then use Bloomer Road to reach Hunter from the Platte Clove Road. Platte Clove Road is in good shape this year. Just be sure your brakes are in good working order if you return down the Platte Clove Road.
