The weather was looking quite bad for sunday, rain all day off and on-cool temps. What a day for a hike and a bushwhack. The plan earlier in the week was for Julie (Timmus) and I to do MacNaughton but the weather just kept getting worse, but seeing as how she was already coming down-we best hike something. So we decided to do a little trail and a short bushwhack.

After a long 2 hour drive to Wakely Dam in Indian Lake we found ourselves signing in at the gate, under a light drizzle, and a heavy fog. The drive into the Plains along the sometimes rough road was actually very nice. We found the jeep road that leads to Cellar, slipped the Jeep into 4 wheel drive and up we went. The old jeep road was is decent shape, a few ruts, a few stones, a few overhanging trees, and a ton of water. I didn't make it as far as I did last year, a mud pit had me picturing myself buried to the door jams and Julie trying to push me out. :D

The fun part was the 50 point turn I had to make in the middle of the road, and having to do it around a 4 foot tall boulder.

Now the hike started for about 0.25 miles along the road before we jumped off into rain forest. It actually wasn't terribly wet, thanks to the openness of the woods. The going was very fast, and pretty steep. Julie lead most of the way from the road, and thanks to her being impatient, we went right up the steepest sections to the ridge.

The summit as always, wooded no views. Today however it was wet and very cold-we shivered ourselves to the point where we had to get down and get on dry clothes. So, upon her request-I found the shortest route off. It just so happens it was one of the steepest as well. Down along ledges, over slippery moss, swinging from trees, and jumping from boulders we were back to the road in a snap. It was now time for a drive over to Wakely.

I thought I had good luck driving along the road to Cellar, so I would drive the road into the old parking spot for Wakely as well. That didn't happen. We got about 100 yards in and the beaver dam was over flowing and the road was washed out. So, I threw it in reverse and parked just up the road in a small clearing.

The hike to the top was relitively eventless. There are a few trees in the way, to go under, over, around-but not much. We climbed to the tower, which was totally ingulfed in the clouds, wind howling, rain spitting, very cold. We were surprised to find the door to the cabin open, and someone had swept and cleaned it up real nice. So, we decided that was a great place to relax, and warm up for a while before heading back down.

It wasn't long before a group of four surprised us, couldn't believe some other fools were out in the rain as well. We swapped how do's and we ran off the mountain, we were so cold and wet. Going down we found that the four we met on top had flagged the trail in spots on the way up. We took it upon ourselves to remove all this flagging on the way down, in hopes that they would get the picture. They probobly just put more up on the way down.

Great day, awesome company-never had so much fun hiking in the rain.
