Champney Falls Trail was broken to the lower falls loop, then unbroken with a few inches of the recent snow up to the Piper Trail. Piper Trail in similar shape to the ledges then lots of ice and crusted snow. We stopped at the top of the ledge .1 miles below the true summit due to high winds, low temperatures and low ambition. Middle Sister Trail to Middle Sister had some ice and sections of deeper blown in snow. Middle Sister Cutoff had shallow unbroken snow. All are now broken out but will fill in again with the high winds. No serious blowdowns. Crossings frozen. West Side Trail didn't appear broken.
Snowshoes are needed to the upper ledges of Chocorua and crampons or some traction (possibly snowshoes) likely advisable above that.
Nice day in the woods but bitterly cold wind chills above. No one felt like doing the swap to crampons so we descended and broke to Middle Sister where it was a bit more comfortable and very scenic. Passed a couple of folks ascending without snowshoes as we were heading out. They were postholing infrequently but deeply. Good gender balance on this trip although I (and the rest of the male population) took a few direct hits.
