This was my 'Crazy Dave' hike but on a dinky-toy scale. Instead of Katahdin and Washington in a Day or all the high peaks in NH, VT and NY in a weekend, I settled on Chocorua and Tremont -- I had the day off Friday so I figured, why not. I'd done Chocorua in winter with Tom but not so far this summer and Tremont is one of those little peaks I've been wanting to do for a while. There really is no significance in doing both of these peaks in one day (they're easy) other than I'd never hiked, driven and then hiked again before. That's not all that significant either but I guess I can always mark a first for myself, can't I?

Luckily I had a typically Dr. Wu Nice Day Friday so both hikes (and the drive across Bear Notch Road) were enjoyable. I actually motored pretty good and ran down both mountains so I was pretty sore and tired the next day but I was able to do both these peaks and still get home early enough to have Friday night free.

Anyway, Chocorua has one of the more fantastic views in the Whites and you're also above treeline for quite a ways. Not like the Baldfaces that I did two days later but still nice. The views to the Sandwich Range are wild and there's a nice view to Carrigan-The Captain-Hancock that I like. Washington is there and there's a wild look over to the Nancy Range, Tremont, Bear Mountain, the Moats and a few other things in that area. Chocorua's low elevation allows for decent looks to the smaller peaks that sometimes look like little knobs when you see them from 4000'ers. But from Chororua they look nice and large and featured.

Tremont has an interesting outlook into the Sawyer River/Pond area. I was a little disappointed -- I figured on stronger views in all directions but primarily you looked over to The Sandwich Range and Carrigan. There's a nice view of the Captain as well. Sawyer Pond is right in front of you (I understand there is a nice view of Tremont from Sawyer Pond and I can understand why!) and had quite a bit of wind going over it. Green's Cliff is practically at the foot of Sawyer Pond and I'd like to get over there someday and scope out the old trail going up there to its ledges.

Other than that, the day ended kinda early. It only took me 6 or 7 hours to do both mountains and the drive but in terms of fun and views, this was an 'A-OK' Day. Both Chocorua and Tremont overlook the same areas but from completely different perspectives and that's what made it great. That's why I chose the both of them. Friday days off are great for hiking some of those lesser known peaks. Next up for me are things like, Table, Bear Mountain, The Moats and so on. Great Hiking!!

Dr. Wu -

Great report and pics...these supposedly "lesser" mountains are high on my list of places to get to soon!
I don't know what Tremont's prominence is but with a quick glance of the map, it looks like it's pretty good. Probably close to 1000' if not over. However, I guess I'd classify this as a 'lesser' mountain. It's kind of a small pyramid no matter how you look at it. It's a very nice mountain though & next time I'd like to climb it as part of a bigger loop or traverse that would take in maybe Owl's Cliff & Sawyer Pond & maybe even Green's Cliff.

Chocorua is smallish but prominent enough and quite impressive when viewed along Rt. 16. It's actually a great mountain to look at from virtually any viewpoint in the Whites!

...I'd never hiked, driven and then hiked again before...
This is a symtom of severe peakbagger syndrome. A rare and incurable disease.:) (Thank goodness)

Last year I did this with Waumbek, Hale, and Cannon. Then later it was Tecumseh and Moosilauke in a day.

I got some stange looks when I was climbing Cannon and I mentioned to a group of hikers I had already hiked Waumbek and Hale that same day.

:D
