So who's going to brave the elements this weekend?

We had a 4000'er jaunt in the Whites planned for tomorrow, but I think that's going to be scrapped for a snowshoe outing in Pawtuckaway instead. Should be sick snowshoe conditions and less risky driving half an hour over to P-Tuck instead of up 16 for the Whites.

I bailed out of Pierce & Eisenhower as did the other two guys I was going with. The old "Law of Diminishing Returns" applies here. No views, no sun and well below zero temps expected. I gotta have a minimum of one of those things going my way this time of year in order to go on a major hike.
Although I might put my snowshoes right next to my bed for tomorrow morning....tee hee..

I planned on trying out my new crampons this weekend. That was until I froze going from the supermarket to my car. My dog goes out and does her business and runs right back to the back door (she's no dummy). It was 20 below zero with a storm coming so I guess I'm no dummy either.

Monday

I was thinking about calling in "sick" on Monday and checking out the beauty in the Whites. Maybe Sandwich Range? Not sure. I know the folks at work will know what I am up to.

I've done the Pawtuckaways many times, my favorites are in winter on snowshoes. Do you go in the north entrance off Deerfield road? Just watch out for the speeding snowmobilers!

This morning I joined 5 other willing souls to venture out and enjoy the Ossipee area. The view from Shaw showed all the summits to the north clear and spectacular. A few adventurous souls joined me to find a nice loop back to the cars.

Tomorrow breaking trail in new snow under an almost full moon is on the menu.

I went out this morning a bit early and did a 6/7 mile jaunt in Wawayanda State Park with parts on the AT. Just to check out the trails for tomorrow. I'm going to go XC skiing tomorrow somewhere and I'd figure I'd check some of the trails that I thought would make nice ski trails so I did a loop in there today before the snow started to fly. Was about 0° but I was plenty warm. It started to snow about a mile from the end of my hike around noonish.

I live in the NE corner of Mass., and as I write this the snow is falling at a pretty good clip. The map says 12"-18" in this area, which is a gift that is not to be taken for granted! I had my skis tuned today (Karhu 10th Mtn) and plan to use them having fun in the local woods tomorrow morning. It sure will be nice to have a 5 minute drive home versus a 3 hour drive!

Just back from doing North Kinsman today with 6 others. Nice hike! Temp was 9 below when we started - warmed up to about 1 above. No wind though, so stayed toasty warm all day. The drive home in the snow took longer than exected - saw 5 cars off the road between Lincoln and Manchester. Staying in tonight, but looks like southern NH is going to get a dumping so tomorrow it's play time!

Ill be ripping at the local place about 30 minutes away. Taking the younger bro and his friend (12 yrs old). Forecasting 2 feet for the ski area. Its gonna be a sick day!

I got out early this morning and did some XC skiing in High Point SP, NJ. Temp was -6. The snow did not start until noon and as I type this we have around 8+ inches. Finally a good storm. :D

I skied at Big Rock in Mars Hill today. A foot of untracked powder in the woods. Sweet. It was some cold riding the chairlift though. That's when skinning up the hill sure helps :D

Tomorrow Sugarloaf. It's supposed to be frigid. I'll have to triple layer

Put on all the gear and went out xc skiing around the neighborhood, with Mrs. KD yesterday, covering about 2.5 miles. What a chuckle, seeing the strange looks people had, looking up from shoveling,as we go zipping by,full balaclavas and goggles on.
Then we walked to the store for some stuff, dressed the same way. As we walked int othe store, the clerk says something about how terrible the weather is,too cold etc. We both look at him and laugh as I say "yeah, but it sure is great camping weather !" (and for us,it is.) Then you wait for the reaction!

I just love doing that! :D

I took full advantage of the southernly snow. First shoveling our immense driveway (does anyone do this anymore?). Then playing in the drifts with my son. Then a quick 4 mile jaunt on the Metacomet with some fresh powder, a broken snowshoe, howling winds, and excellent views. Sunday was a great day!
