Trail Conditions: very hard packed from the parking lot to Lake Arnold. The section from the Loj to Marcy Dam is very icy throughout, with patches of bare ground, mud, and slushy snow. From Lake Arnold to the summit is hard packed, but with some crunchy snow on the surface. The summit is covered with thick snow covered with a thin layer of icy crust.
Special Equipment Required: microspikes and/or crampons would be almost essential from the parking lot to Marcy Dam. Bare booting would work, but there would be some very slippery places. I wore crampons all the way to the summit, and had no problems with slipping or post holing. From Lake Arnold to the summit, snowshoes might be a good idea as the sun is beginning to make the snow heavy and slushy.
Comments: see trip report for further details.
