Yeah, I'm gettin' mighty slow at puttin' these things up but I've been very busy as of late...

For Memorial Day Weekend, Shamie and I headed up to Maine for a fun-filled weekend of peakbagging. We had reservations at The Maine Roadhouse but wound up driving right past it without noticing on our way to COP Snow. It doesn't have a sign out front or anything so you have to know what the building looks like! Still, it's an awesome place and is very hiker friendly too.

We had no trouble with directions to the trailhead so that was good and it wasn't raining and the moment which wonderful (though the black flies were out). The trail starts off on an ATV/Snowmobile trail which was pretty smooth, though a little muddy. As we passed numerous blowdowns, it became obvious that no vehicles had passed through for at least a few months. You need to make sure that you are following the main route. There is one place where the ATV trail turns and there's a herd path straight ahead. Do NOT go straight. Turn left with the ATV trail and cross the third bridge. Shortly after the point where you take the right turn, the trail got muddier as another ATV trail which was freshly used entered. As we approached the pond, we had to bushwack around a large number of drunk ATVers who were partying at the spot they couldn't get past. The trail was like a lake there and there were more blowdowns.

The pond was pretty cool to look out on. The clouds and fog gave it an almost eerie look. Continuing on, we climbed the wet, muddy trail which was occasionally steep. Once at the top, we were greated by some moderately strong wind. I checked old the old firewarden's cabin and the wreckage of the freshly toppled cap. Then, I climbed the ladder to see if I could get any semblance of a view. While, on the ladder, the wind continued to blow and the sky opened up enough in two directions to give me some views. wrapping my arms around the rungs, I took a bunch of pictures. it was really cool and was a dramatic change from the rain clouds we'd driven through all day.

After that break, we headed back down and found the pond looking so different from earlier in the day. The ATVers were now gone and the rest of the hike out would have been very uneventful except for the fact that I rolled my ankle badly. It was the same one I had sprained 7 year ago. It hurt a lot and slowed me down. We got back to the car and set out for another adventure, finding a place in Stratton where you can get dinner after 8pm! (answer White Wolf Inn)

Here are my pics!
