Herd path very well defined, more so than many of the "marked" trails. While there is certainly a fair amount of mud and muck, it's part of what makes this hike interesting and unique. Wear gaiters! There are plenty of locations along this route that offer excellent viewing of nearby peaks. There is only one lean-to in the Bradley Pond area so if you're spending a night or two, bring a tent in case the lean-to is occupied to capacity.
