On Sunday my sister and I headed out on the Davis Path to hike Crawford and Stairs Mountains. The trail had been well packed out and even though we could have bare booted we kept our snowshoes on as neither of us wanted to bother with taking them off and strapping them to our packs. I have to say the trail going up to Crawford seems to go on and up forever!

After an hour or two though we finally made it to the spur path that leads to the summit of Crawford. Here we met up with four other hikers who had spent the past two nights camping out on Stairs. One of the guys had a pack on that must have weighed about 100 lbs…its size was impressive and just looking at it made me want to teeter right over! They informed us that snowshoes were not needed and that they would more than likely be cumbersome along the way because of all the blowdowns. So, off they came and we stashed them in the woods! I felt lighter for about two steps.

The views from Crawford are really nice and we stayed up there long enough to take some photos and then headed on toward Stairs. The trail meanders along and we had no problems getting around the blowdowns. It’s been a while since I’ve hiked with just my sister and it was really nice to be out again with just her….we laughed and talked and laughed some more…ok, we got down right silly at times too! Thankfully there were no others on the trail to witness our foolishness!

When we finally reached Stairs Col we took a quick break and then headed up the last steep section to the top. This section was slow going and tiring as there were numerous blowdowns, some which we had to even crawl under! Wanting to get up to the top and take a break we passed on going out to the downlook.

Reaching the top we then headed down the short spur trail and out on to the ledges where we took a nice long break. It was here that Rachel surprised me with some birthday brownies and they sure were yummy! Thank you Rachel for making my birthday so special once again!!! Hhhmmm, do I dare say I can't wait for next years birthday??

The way back out was just a pleasant as the way in, we picked up our snowshoes and then made a mad dash back down to the car. Too bad there was not more snow on the ground and this trail had some sections that looked they would be a lot fun for butt sliding!

Here are some pictures from our trip. http://community.webshots.com/user/mbaross

Cool shots! How did you make some color, some b&w? Is that a function key on your camera, or did you do it through a computer program?

Before I got the Canon DSLR, I had the Canon G2, which had a setting for B&W. But I lost that feature when I upgraded. A good s/w editing tool lets you do it too. But, I've been told that the best results come straight out of the camera.

I like B&W from time to time. It can really get your attention and make you study the picture intently.

great trip and happy b-day!

That is a fun trail - sherpak and I did this last summer as a backpack - great trail all around - good views from stairs mtn. have to get back and do it in winter someday myself.

Sounds like a wonderful time! I did that same hike on rotten snow this spring and know exactly what you mean about the climb to Crawford spur going up steeply forever! Still, these are two of my favorite summits and wonderful places to celebrate a birthday!

Great job on your webshots site. Enjoyed your pics of various hikes. You did Welsh Dickey at a time when the mucho exposed rock could be slippery and risky. I was there on a rainy day and it was slippery.. Thanks...Great Tr and Pics...Keep it up
