Actually only deranged person might have been me. Pleasantly surprised to find this AMC Trip was lead by Double Bow whom I’d hiked Mt Tecumseh with back in January. We had a congenial party of 8. Conversation seldom lagged. I was also happy to see Matt a good young fellow newly bitten with the hiking bug who since has bought new boots and poles since I’d met him back in July on hike to the Hancocks. This hike made it #8 for him and #35 & #36 for me.
Distance of 10 miles, hike was tougher than I thought it would be, could have been on account of poor sleep and early start from Waltham, would be nice for a change to get up eat breakfast and arrive at trailhead without long car drive beforehand, weather proved to be warm and humid in contrast to multi-week run of cool and clear weather we’d been having, views were very subdued on account of the haze, but digital photos proved interesting as Willey provides such fine views of range after range in varying shades of pale blue and gray.
Trails were in decent condition. These popular trails suffer much from erosion and steep sections could use additional “hardening” against heavy traffic they receive. Waterbars could use some dredging. No Blowdowns. We saw many other parties of hikers.
Gray Jays were absent on Mt Field summit. Wonder if they’re off harvesting late summer crops of juicy berries. Has anyone else noticed lately an absence of Gray Jays elsewhere?
