Dismantling ADK Cabins??

I've recently moved back to the NE and was told recently that the old ADK lean-tos are being dismantled but haven't found an official explanation as to why. I could guess my way through the two sides of this issue but would love to hear the real reason. I was told it is just the back-country cabins.

Any ideas or info???

The ones at higher elevations have been taken down...Snobird, Little Marcy, Plateau.
Others that were too close to streams or in environmentally unsound locations are gradually being relocated.
No plan to remove them, though.

Some lean-to's have been eliminated, such as at Marcy Dam and Lake Colden, to try to reduce impact in those areas.

Other lean-to's are moved as they fall into disrepair. They are moved to allow the former site to recover and also to abide by the regulations regarding distance from trail/streams/etc... Lean-to's that fall into this category include Avalanche Camps, Feldspar, Slant Rock and probably others.
