I spent 3 days out in the sunshine wednesday thru friday. The first two were in Acadia NP and today was in Gulf Hagas.
The first day was spent doing a short climb up Dorr Mt, which is the lesser known mt next to cadillac. It was a 5 and a half mile trek up the south ridge and down the north ridge. Not too challenging a hike, only 1500 vertical all told. Nice views on the ridgeline looking out over the island.
The second day was spent going up cadillac mt., the highest mt on the island at 1532 feet. My friend joined me for this hike, which started at bubble pond. if anyone is going to hike cadillac this year, do not hike it from the park loop road, unless you want a boring hike that ascends the mt at about 50 feet from the auto road the whole way. Parking at bubble pond is the best route up for the adventurous. It is only 1.4 miles to the top, but the first .9 is straight up about 1300 feet of the cliffs on the west face trail. There are several places where the trail could use rungs, but there are none to be found. just wet rocks that skirt the cliffs. once you reach the top of the cliffs it is an easy half mile walk to the top of the mt, where you can hang out with all the tourists!! Lots of mature people up on the mt that day, looks like the tour bus picked them up from the home.
day three involved a 3 hour drive up to the bustling metropolis of brownville junction. from there, i went into the katahdin iron works and did the gulf hagas loop. the hike was 8.2 miles around what is called maine's little grand canyon. it is a river gorge with walls over 100 feet above the river and lots of waterfalls. besides katahdin and acadia, it is one of the must see areas to visit. i took a bunch of pictures, but deciding between them which ones are the best are kind of difficult, since they all are gorgeous. i did most of the hike in a good pace but on the way back through the gorge i got tired from the walking and the heat, but luckily found lower falls and screw auger falls, which i spent a good 30 minutes swimming in the falls. that woke me back up and the rest of the hike was fine. the only bad part was fording the river on the way back, which you do once going out and once going back. it was only knee deep(if you are 6foot2) but the sore feet did not like fording the river again. after that, it was time to go back home and survey the damage of scratches, bugbites, and sunburn.
