I had some clean-up work to do this Sunday 10/08/06. I talked to a member of the 4000’er committee and he felt that my trip up the Tripyramids it did not count, because I rode my bike up the Livermore Trail/Road to the South Slide Trail junction. This made for the interesting observation that Chips, my pet Labrador Retriever, finished the NH 48 before I did. (I have yet to hear a snarky comment from her.) So this past Sunday Zippy, Chips, and I headed up The Tripyramids on the Sabbaday Trail.
We left the parking lot at 6:53am and there were only 4 cars in parking area for the Sabbaday Trailhead. The trail was beautiful, dry, and fast. Even the steep section which takes you up about 600 feet in a quarter mile was easy in dry conditions, however the moss on the sloping ledge would make it very difficult when wet. We reached the summit of North Tripyramid at 9:58 am. From the summit we worked our way down the North Slide trail about 230 feet where we found a very nice vantage point for pictures, well worth the effort. We photographed Waterville Valley for the second time on consecutive weekends. Then we headed across Middle and South Tripyramids to the south slide which is another very nice view point. We went down the south slide less than 200’ to the Kate Sleeper Trail turned left and did West Sleeper. The summit of West Sleeper is about 75’ from the trail and a number of people have made the short bushwhack as evidenced by the trampled shrubbery at the summit. We reached East Sleeper about 12:50 pm. We then proceeded down the Downes Brook Trail, which was very easy and relatively flat. There are numerous stream crossings (10?), that could be very difficult in high water. Most of the leaves had fallen from the trees on the Downes Brook Trail. There was a mile or so hike up the Kanc. (Rt 112) to the parking lot. We got to the car 9 hours to the minute after we left, 15.5 miles. At 4 pm the parking lot was full, with cars lined up 0.1 mile both sides up the road on this holiday weekend.
