12/18/2008 Thursday: No apparent ice storm damage. Definitely needed traction for the steeper sections, we had crampons so that was what we used, the toe piece on our MSR's was insufficient. The base was froze fairly hard with five or so inches of fluffy snow on top. Snowshoes were marginally useful. On the ridge, snowshoes would have been helpful to prevent an occasional minor post hole, but the drifts (sometimes about a foot and a half high) were spread far apart enough that it didn't make scene to keep swapping snowshoes and crampons. The stream crossing were unstable, but definitely easily passable. Be cautious of thin ice!
