To my surprise there was no snow whatsoever on the Forest Service road leading to the Gale River trailhead. With the leaves all fallen, there were frequent glimpses of the Twins looming ahead during the approach. The stream crossing were all tricky because of relatively high water and ice on the rocks - I particularly enjoyed the slippery 2x6 that replaces the washed-out bridge @ 1.7 mi. (not designed to support a 200+ lber and his winter pack). Both the Gale River and Garfield Ridge trails had very little blowdown and only a few inches of snow. Terrific views of Mt Garfield looming overhead and new perspectives on many of the other Pemi peaks. Through snow-covered firs the brief summit bushwhacks were fun.
I met lots of friendly folks on the trail. There were 10 cars at the trailhead and on the way home I passed the Nancy Tr parking area which was filled; it's great to see so many people out enjoying the mountains this time of the year!
