As promised last week, here is a quick TR from our easter weekend attempt at finding some snow on the Ermine Brook slide.
To make the TR quick, we never actually reached the slide as we turned around at our planned turn around time.
We began the hike at the trailhead with the intention of hiking into Moose pond on Friday and then up to the slide of Saturday. We started the hike at 10:30 and arrived at Moose pond at 1:30pm. After setting up camp and eating we left for the slide at 2:30. Two of the four in the group had brought along their snowboards with the hope of finding snow on the slide. From our campsite, we could see that the slide was mostly covered in snow, so the brought their boards. By 5:00 pm, we had bushwacked to just below the slide, but gave up hope of making it farther up the slide as we had given ourselves a 5:30 turnaround. We went back to the campsite and pondered the possibility of going back up Saturday morning, but it poured all night and by morning the slide had lost at least 50% of the remaining snow. I will try to post pictures to show this. Saturday morning, we had breakfast and packed out to join family for the long weekend.
In retrospect, the snowboards were useless weight and slowed us down enough to prevent reaching the EB slide. Our bushwack route was as suggested by members of this board and is indeed an much nicer bushwack on the northern side of the brook. It's a beautiful area, I'm just frustrated at having been turned around for a second attempt at reaching this slide.
Next time...
Here are a few pictures:
Trailhead
Still some patches of snow on the trail to moose pond.
Nice Weather
EB slide from moose pond on Friday Apr 14, nearly covered in snow.
Top of Bushwack in open hardwood.
EB slide from moose pond on Saturday Apr 15, after hard rain overnight.
Rest stop on the hike out.
That's all.
