Eric and I climbed Elephant on Monday afternoon, beginning with much trepidation. I had an old map and foolishly started up along the stream that drains to the peak's southwest. We soon saw the futility of this and whacked up to the ridge on our left, soon finding - ta da! - the road that takes you right up to about 2700'. We had parked right where this road turns left, about 1/2 mile from South Arm road. Anyway, the whack up from the end of the road was much easier than anticipated, though I did lose my watch in a bit of shrubbery. Descending was a bit tougher as we veered too far right and hit some thick spruce. Then it was an easy trot down to the car. Of course it would have been even easier if we had driven up the road in the first place. Total time from the car was a bit under four hours, including a needless walk up and down from the 2700' level.
