I was just thinking of doing Macomb from Elk Lake and then heard that hunting season is starting. A quck scan of topics here didn't turn up any notice, so I'm just putting this out as a reminder. I think big game rifle season starts tomorrow, Saturday Oct. 22.

The Northern Zone hunting season runs 'til Dec. 4, I think. I'm not sure of the dates that Elk Lake access is restricted, but I'm sure that someone out there in "VFTT Land" knows the answer. It comes up every year.

Why are the trails closed? Are hunters on private land more likely to shoot hikers verses hunters on public land?

aren't hikers part of the public???

or is it private hikers that the trails are open too???

It's private property - they can do whatever they want. We should respect private property and the rules that owners impose. I don't have a problem with that.

The Adirondacks is comprised of some 6 million acres of public and private property. Many of the hiking trails pass over private lands with the consent of land owners, or as the result of public easements that have been granted through negotiations with the state. We have plenty of other places to hike during this time. There are at least 3 different routes up to the Dixes that are still available to use as well.

I know it is private property, but I don't agree that they can do whatever they want. They are located in one of the most beautiful places in the country and they should be obligated to allow public access at all times. I realize this reeks of socialism but should the ones with the most money and huge amounts of property be able to dictate who, when and where the less fortunate can take a walk. Maybe this was fine 100 years ago but with the pressure on the use of the park constantly increasing I don't believe this is valid anymore.

Excellent argument. See how it works in Hyannis or Palm Springs. Or downtown Lake Placid, for that matter.

What ! I own land I do not have any obligation to any one whatsoever to let them trapiase on our land. It is my families land not any one elses. Maybe you will not mind some one you disagree with using your land for thir fun ? Hell can I come over with a huge D 10 dozer and drive it around for kicks you won't mind right as I need to keep in practice it is for the public good I keep in practice with my equipment ? Maybe I can fire up my chainsaws and drop what ever trees I want and then .... . Private land ownewrshipasnd being able to dictate what will or will not happen on your land is part of what sperates the us form the rest of the world . I do not want any one telling me I have open my families land period we bought it we own it , we say what will and will not happen on it .NO ONE ELSE !
