Once again Gail, Ronnie and I teamed up for another weekend of hiking.

The first of two days started up towards Esther. It was a cloudy morning but our spirits were high since we were out on the mountains again. Trail conditions were good. We started from the Atmospheric Sciences Research Center.
We made our way to the summit of Esther, but views were no where to be seen. We read the plaque, had a snack, took our pictures and moved on towards Whiteface.

On the way up to Whiteface a light rain started. We weren't complaining, but we were comenting on how great the views must be as we traversed the open rocks. As we summited the clouds had overcome the peak to a 100 yard visability. We went into the building to get out of the rain for a quick lunch. As we were getting ready to head back down, the skies had opened up and gave us a glimpse of the views off the summit. As cloudy as it was, it was still a treat to grab the view. As quickly as it cleared, the clouds and rain returned. We made our way down with Ronnie singing in the rain.

It rained the rest of the day and thru the night. We slept in on Sunday morning hoping the rain would stop. We crawled out of our hammocks and tents, had a quick breakfast as the skies were starting to brighten. We parked at Adk Loj and set out for Nye and Street.

Since we slept in a bit, we had decided to take the long way up to Nye and Street. Ahhhh. You ask, What is the long way up???? The long way up, is, go past the ski trail up to Nye, continue up the trail for about 1 mile, turn around, go back the same mile, and then go up the trail to Nye and Street. I would like to add that we saw some very amazing trees on that extra mile that made it well worth it. We recomend this route for the scenery.

We made our way to the stream. Gail and I removed our boots to cross as Ronnie chose to wash his boots. We made our way up to Nye, had a snack, took a picture and back down to the trail jct to Street. There was a group having lunch at the jct. We said our hello's and continued up to Street. The weather was improving as the day went on. When we reached the summit of Street we were greeted with awsome views of the High Peaks. We stayed a while and took in the sights, then started back down.

We returned to the Loj, went back to South Meadows to break camp and head back home. Another good weekend and 4 more peaks grabbed.

I may have seen you on your climb Saturday. I was climbing Whiteface with a friend and we were passed by a group of three about 2/3 of the way between Marble Mountain summit and the little shelter right where the trail levels out (shortly before the Esther heard path cairn). Could have been you ? I would guess this was around 9-9:30am or so. We skipped our trip to Esther because it started to rain shortly after we started to descend Whiteface. We loaded our packs down with water for training to hike with heavy loads and dumped ~13 liters of water at the summit so "tagging" Esther would have been much more attractive on descent to us. Given the rain we skipped it and headed back for the Reservoire trailhead. I have hiked Whiteface via Wlimington trail more then a dozen times, gone to Esther twice. 1st time way back when there was cannister in the mid 1990's, last time in winter(Jan or Feb 2005 I think) where I did not see a plack or cannister. I know they removed the cannister, how long has the plack been there ?
