I am planning on hiking this weekend- if the summits are clouded over, we are thinking of going up to Ethan pond, given the weather this year, does anyone know if the pond is safely frozen? how about Lonesome Lake? Thanks
Be very careful of Ethan because of its substantial stream coming in in front. The North Fork also leaves the pond on the other end so its not the most stable ponds. Going in from the side would most likely be fine, just be careful. -Mattl
Temps have been back to seasonably cold the last few days and will probably remain so for awhile now, but there have been so many freeze & thaws this winter that I wouldn't trust any ice. If I go near ponds with others, I have rope in a pack; on my own, I stay close to the edge. There's probably enough exposed rock on the edge of Ethan Pond to get over to the shelter if that's where you're headed. I wouldn't trust the middle.
