Well, that's what it stands for, seriously. What an appropriate name.
I started out getting a very late start, 2:30pm to be more exact. I started from Dacy Clearing in hopes to snag Sleeping Beauty again on the way out-well that didn't happen, here's why.
I looked real quick at a map for the area and I looked like the trail went right over the mountain, so I went with that. Great way to break in my new boots and trekking poles. I hiked really fast into Bumps Pond and near the pond there's a state trail sign that someone had painted "Eurebus Mtn 0.6 miles. I thought great that's pretty close and along a trail, I should have no issues here. The trail is very lightly used and closing in at a few spots. But soon the trail begins to descend, and descend, and descend-what the hells going on?? I know I've gone 0.6 miles and trail keeps switchbacking and I can't really see where it's going. So, I got out the gps to see where I was. I was still .7 miles from Eurebus. OK maybe I read the sign wrong, maybe it said 1.6 miles. Actually the trails last switchback was taking me right toward the mountain.
Quickly I could see the mountain ahead of me and then to the side of me, but the trail kept going around the mountain at the base of the cliffs. I was now .18 from the summit, but straight up through the cliffs. I figured the trail is just bypasiing the cliffs and would climb the back side-I'm now .26 miles from the summit and the trail is descending again. Well, I wasn't going to put up with that. I was going to take a heading for the summit and just bushwhack it.
Well here's where the fun begins. I hit some of the nastyest blow down and thick growth I have ever seen this far south in the Adirondacks. I never have an issue with pushing through stuff, but twice I had to back track down hill to go around these sections. Luckily I finally found a moose trail I could follow through most of the crap. This summit better have a view!! NO!!
Well not completely a no, but not much to brag about. The summit was covered in thick and blow down. I checked out every high point on the mountain, and found not much for views. My gps track log, looks like a drunk man was using it.
I ddecided real quick I wasn't going down the same way, so I took the short descent rout directly to the trail-you know the .18 miles I mentioned before. Damn steep that's for sure, but nice views from the cliffs. Back at the trail in record time, and you know those new boots and poles-well they're not so new anymore. The hike back to the car was practically a run, and Sleeping Beauty was a no go. It only took me 3.5 hours round trip, but it felt like an eternity, at the time.
Oh, back at the sign at Bumps Pond-it did say 0.6 miles. It was closer 1.25 miles. Keep that in mind if you plan on going. Don't know why you would, but just in case.
